JEA Says “Lightning Arrester” Has Caused Power Outages in Thousands of Jacksonville Home

Jacksonville, Fla. — According to JEA, thousands of homes reportedly lost power on Friday night.
Its online blackout map shows houses in Mandarin, Loreto, Greenland and Batram affected by the blackout.
At 10pm, about 9,800 customers were affected, but before 10:30pm, this number had increased to 13,300
It was initially estimated that electricity would be restored before 11pm. The utility company’s blackout map showed that the electricity would be fully restored soon.
An email sent to customers on Saturday explained that the power outage was caused by the lightning arrester at the Southside substation. This is a device used in power transmission and telecommunications systems to protect the insulation and conductors of the system from the destructive effects of lightning strikes.
JEA stated that the problem affected the facility’s transmission line, which supplies power to customers in the Southern District, Mandarin, and parts of northern St. John’s County.
“Our staff will restore power to you as soon as possible. Most customers see the power restored within 15 minutes,” JEA explained. “Although we believe this is an isolated situation, our staff will continue to address its root cause.”
You can report the interruption via SMS and receive resumption updates. Register by sending SMS REG to MyJEA (69532), and then send SMS OUT to MyJEA during the power outage.
