If you spend time designing or servicing North American underground medium voltage distribution systems, you’ve almost certainly run across the term T Deadbreak Connector. Field crews, specification engineers and procurement buyers often call it a T-body, T-tap or tee separable connector. It’s common to get questions: what exactly is this fitting, where does it go on site, and what should you double-check before specifying one for a job?
Our ATT-15/25-600 T Deadbreak Connector follows IEEE 386, the primary specification for separable insulated connectors used on distribution feeders. It is fully shielded and submersible, molded from peroxide-cured EPDM rubber. Its core job is simple: provide a reliable way to terminate and splice underground main feeder cables.
This 600A T fitting is made to form T-joints for padmount transformers, ring main units and other distribution gear. On many underground projects, contractors rely on it to branch off a feeder circuit. You can daisy-chain multiple T connectors together when you need several taps from one main cable run. With an adaptor, the 600A port also steps down to work with standard 200A elbows or elbow arresters. There is a built-in capacitive test point on every unit. Installers use this access point for voltage indication and fault indicator mounting, which fits typical live-line check requirements for underground networks.
The T-body is an integrated assembly. It combines stress control features, conductive EPDM insert and insulating EPDM layers. Its conductive outer jacket meets IEEE 592 requirements. Each shipping kit includes all the parts installers usually need on location:
T deadbreak connector main housing
Compression or mechanical cable lug
Stress cone
Double-head bolts, silicone lubricant, cleaning paper
Hard copy installation instructions and test certificate
One important note for sizing: we select the connector primarily by the outer insulation diameter of your cable. Conductor cross-section is only a reference value. This trips up a lot of new specifiers. The ATT 15 range is built for 15kV class cables, covering conductor sizes from 25mm² up to 500mm². The ATT 25 range works with 25kV class cables, covering 35mm² to 400mm² conductors.
This series is engineered to interchange with widely available IEEE386 deadbreak elbow style products from established brands. Every connector goes through AC voltage withstand and partial discharge testing before leaving our factory. We mark each unit with a QR code, so batches and test records can be traced individually.
This is one of the most frequent mix-ups we see in project specs. A deadbreak T connector is not built to open or close under load current. It is intended for permanent tapping and cable termination work, only when the circuit is de-energized. If your application requires switching while the line is energized, you will need to select a loadbreak elbow instead. Specifying the wrong type here creates safety and compliance risks on site.
Our ordering code follows a straightforward format: ATT – [Voltage Class] / 600 – [Cable Size] Take ATT25/600-120 as an example: this is a 25kV, 600A T deadbreak connector, matched for 120mm² concentric neutral cable. When you send over your cable datasheet, we will confirm the insulation OD first before locking in the correct part number.
A quick reality check: this fitting works well for standard underground residential and commercial distribution runs, but it is not designed for repeated disconnection cycles. If the site expects frequent reconfiguration, our engineering team will usually recommend alternative connection schemes.
If you are sourcing IEEE 386 compliant, interchangeable 600A T-body deadbreak connectors for your underground distribution projects, send over your cable drawings and voltage class. We can walk through sizing and supply full assembled kits for EPC teams and regional distributors.
