The world’s first UHV Multi-terminal Flexible DC Converter Station Has Been Built!

Date:07-07-2021

With the rapid development of new energy, China has become the largest country of hydropower, wind power, solar power generation, and renewable energy accounts for continuous increases. To make these volatility, intermittent clean electric energy, upgrade the power transmission technology is imperative. This requires more advanced power transmission equipment.

Liubei Converter Station in Guangxi is the first UHV multi-terminal flexible DC converter station in the world. It is also a multi-terminal hybrid DC project with the highest voltage grade and the largest transmission capacity in the world.

The new generation of flexible DC converter valve has a faster speed of power regulation, which can realize the rapid compensation of the fluctuating clean energy charge and power, and change the aggressive and intractable current into a flexible one, making it possible for clean energy to be connected to the grid.At the same time, it can reduce the time to troubleshoot the grid to less than 100 milliseconds.

One of the core of the flexible DC converter valve is the flexible module. The price of a flexible module is equivalent to that of a senior car. It can process tens of thousands of points of data in one thousandth of a second to achieve the precise control of transmission power and improve the control and protection accuracy of the power grid to the microsecond level

TBEA undertakes the task of equipment development and production of Udongliu North Pole 1 converter station, with a total capacity of 3GW, involving 2 valve halls and 24 valve towers.
The other core component is the control board card, which is the brain of the flexible DC converter valve. There are tens of thousands of electronic devices on the seemingly ordinary board card, each of which has its own transmission line, capable of achieving extremely high frequency transmission of more than 1 billion Hertz.Such massive and fast data processing capacity is equivalent to 8,000 times of data uploaded by the whole valve control system within the blink of a human eye of 0.2 seconds.

This technology is the commanding height of energy application technology that the global power giants are seizing at present, and there are only three countries in the world that can manufacture it.

The new flexible DC converter valve is ready for operation. It will be used in a new flexible DC transmission line, the Kunliulong DC project, which will carry the 33 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity produced annually by the Wudongde Hydropower Station, the world’s seventh-largest hydropower station, 1,452 kilometers to Guangdong and Guangxi provinces.

Flexible direct current (VDC) transmission technology, which enables faster and more flexible grid regulation, is considered a key technology to cope with the large-scale grid connection of renewable energy in the future.
