Cable branch boxes serve two main purposes in grid management :
Cable Branching: In long-distance power lines, using a single large-capacity main cable is more economical than running multiple smaller cables. As the line approaches the point of consumption (e.g., a residential area or commercial center), the branch box is used to split the main cable into several smaller cables that connect to individual loads, such as streetlights or buildings .
Cable Connection (Junction): When a cable route is longer than a single standard cable length, a connection point is needed. For shorter distances, an inline joint is used. However, for longer routes (e.g., over 1000 meters), using a cable branch box for the connection is often preferred for enhanced safety and reliability, as it avoids multiple buried inline joints .
Cable branch boxes are generally categorized based on their internal components and design philosophy .
Basic Junction Boxes: These are the simplest type, containing no switching equipment. They merely house cable termination points and connection accessories. The incoming and outgoing cables are electrically connected at the same potential. They are suitable for straightforward splitting or branching .
Advanced Boxes with Switches: These boxes include not only connection points but also one or more switchgear units, such as SF6-insulated load-break switches. This allows for circuit control, isolation, and changing the network configuration. They can function similarly to outdoor ring main units (RMUs), offering greater operational flexibility .
American-Style vs. European-Style: This is a key distinction based on the internal connection technology .
American-Style: Features a parallel branching system using a insulated bus bar with plug-in connectors. Key characteristics include a single front door, compact width, and the ability for 200A branch connectors to be plugged in or out under load, acting as a switch .
European-Style: Often uses a series branching approach where T-shaped connectors are linked in a chain. They typically have doors on both sides, use through-wall bushings as busbars, and employ bolted connections with a standard rating of 630A. This design offers clear cable arrangement .
Fully Insulated & Sealed: Provides a high level of safety for personnel and is protected against environmental factors like dust, moisture, and flooding .
Compact & Flexible: Modular design allows for various configurations to meet different wiring requirements, making them ideal for space-constrained urban areas .
Low Maintenance: Designed for long-term, reliable outdoor operation with minimal upkeep .
Enhanced Safety: Models with switches include safety interlocks (“five-proof” interlocking) and features like cable fault indicators to quickly locate problems .
